Jim was a year ahead of me at St. Thomas Academy; he was my predecessor as editor of the school paper. We called him "Gramps" because he was so convincing playing old men in school plays. In the pictures here, he looks really young! A decade and a half later, my family and I were in the live audience of a "Prairie Home Companion" broadcast, and after signoff we went down front, where Jim was clearing the stage. I called "Hey, Gramps!" to him, and he recognized me immediately. We had a neat chat. I knew about his radio work but not about the coast guard service. What a guy. Cherish the memories.

Remember Jim very well from working alongside him at MNN. We had a surprise birthday party for his 50th and when he showed up he told the group “Well, ya pulled it off!”

I was so sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. We were good friends during our time at St. Thomas Academy, he had a wonderfully accomplished life, I am proud to have known him. May God bless and comfort Jim’s family.

In high school, Jim was known as a nice guy and a generous friend. At age 17, he took me skiing in Wisconsin for my first time. That sport became my passion, and I’ve always been grateful to Jim.

My brother Jim was always there when I needed him to help move to a new apartment, fix a car, cut down a tree, be my Best Man, or polish off a leftover keg of beer! Over the years, we hiked and camped, hunted and fished, and canoed and skied together. Many times I laughed with Jim to the point of tears, and our conversations could run on for hours. I cherish all the years Jim brightened our family gatherings with his sense of humor, sharp wit, and ready smile. I’ll miss you Big Brother.

We will always remember Jim for his buoyant personality and warmth. He was a good friend, and greatly admired for all of his talents in electronics and the arts. His woodworking skills were amazing and his love for family and friends was heartfelt. We will truly miss our friend, "gramps", and will never forget him.
