I was heartbroken to hear this news. Nils and I were close for a brief period and he is someone who has made a lasting impression on my life. He was crazy brilliant, passionate, and devastatingly complex. I have such fond memories of how we used to play pool together, or how moved he would get listening to music, or how he would come to my house with a backpack full of old books and read to me from them. We also shared a love for art and film–and I remember going to see an Ozu film with him once. He was truly unique and I have never met anyone else like him. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones.

A famous educator once said it was our job, To make prophets of our children. Nils was a prophet of truths Who thought it was his job, To stuff meaning into meaninglessness. "Higher praise, i cannot think of…" -one of Nils' former "Lovers" I loved him so much i regularly asked him; "Tell me again why your mother named you the plural of Zero?"

I am very sorry for your loss. I admire the open way you shared the issues related to mental health and addiction. I can so relate to your sadness as I lost my own son five years ago. Our sons might have walked similar paths in this life, and we, as the families of those who loved them, likely have similar stories of trying to help them. I did not know Nils, but my heart breaks for you. He sounds like a man that gave more joy to others than he could find for himself. Peace and blessings to you, and all who loved him. I will say his name out loud, because he mattered in this world, and he will be remembered.

Nils was one of a kind. A true American original. He can't be replaced. I'll miss him and remember our time together as great memories.

I am without words, except to express my heartfelt sympathies to Nils's loved ones. I've known him since 2005 and we had quite a lot of fun and memorable times together. It's so sad to hear of his passing. Sending love to your family, Steve and Winnie.
