Obituary of William John Mandel

Mandel, William John (Bill), age 92, of Mendota Heights, MN, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully on February 12, 2024.

Born on January 3, 1932, in St. Paul, MN where he remained a lifelong resident. He was a graduate of Monroe High School in 1951, where he was the captain for his football team. After high school he joined the Air Force, and for which he served in the Korean War. Upon returning home he attended and graduated from St. Thomas College, now the University of St. Thomas. Bill spent many years in the banking industry, all in the Twin Cities area, including a lengthy career at The First National Bank of St. Paul. He served as President of the St. Paul Figure Skating Club when his daughters were competitive figure skaters. Growing up near lower 7th Street in St. Paul, Bill developed a love for Italian cooking and would later create a signature spaghetti sauce that his family loved. In retirement, Bill enjoyed golfing and spent countless hours watching his grandsons play baseball, football, and hockey throughout the Twin Cities area.

Bill was the youngest of 10 children and was the last remaining sibling.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Donna Mae, his two daughters, Michele Mandel and Mary Tichy (Paul), three grandsons, Nolan, Nash and Blake Tichy, and granddaughter, Ness, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his nine siblings.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 20, 2024. A mass of Christian burial will be held at the Church of the Assumption, 51 West 7th Street, St Paul, MN, with visitation beginning at 9am and the funeral mass beginning at 10am. Lunch will follow. A private burial will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Church of the Assumption, or to the charity of your choice.
